Head for the Future is a programme for experienced headteachers based on the groundbreaking Leadership Programme for Serving Headteachers (LPSH).

Head for the Future final programmes

For the past three years, NCSL has delivered Head for the Future in partnership with Hay Group and three experienced regional providers: the Centre for Educational Leadership, HTI and the Institute of Education, London University. The programme has made a huge contribution to leadership development in education and, taken together with LPSH, has benefitted over 14,000 headteachers and led to real improvements in their leadership and effectiveness.

The final Head for the Future programmes will run from spring 2009 to December 2009. Despite its significant impact on school leadership, the rapidly changing and complex context for headteachers with new models of leadership and the need for great flexibility means that a single national programme, no matter how effective, can no longer meet these increasingly diverse needs. The powerful practice developed through Head for the Future will be used to build future provision for experienced headteachers.

The application deadline for recruitment onto the Head for the Future programme for the academic year 2009-10 has now passed. No further recruitment will take place.

The new Head for the Future programme replaces the successful Leadership Programme for Serving Headteachers (LPSH).
Head for the Future has been designed collaboratively between NCSL and the Hay Group Consortium and retains many of the best features of LPSH:

Head for the Future also tackles emerging challenges for headship, particularly the need to collaborate with other schools and agencies. As different models of schools emerge, each with an individual ethos, a new set of challenges and demands are being placed upon their leaders. The new programme helps participants deal with this by challenging their perceptions about change and desired outcomes.

Head for the Future is a fast-paced programme with stimulating debate which demands both personal reflection and commitment to action. It will provide you with an honest assessment of your impact on others and will help shape your leadership for years to come. Because it focuses on how you help others to grow and take initiative, it is an investment in your school's capacity as well as your own. It supports you in sustaining the vision and clarity your staff need to enable them to step up.
