Here are some materials related to the themes of the recent New Heads Conference.

Tough Conversations, Stephen Dando

Think carefully about the best way to approach people who are working out of alignment with the organisation's goals, but don't put off having difficult conversations. If people become defensive, explaining how their behaviour affects you at an individual level can be very effective.

Remain Emotionally Detached in Difficult Situations, by Dame Yasmin Bevan DBE, Headteacher Denbigh High School

Yasmin talks about the difficult situation she had to face three days into her new headship dealing with a member of staff unhappy with her appointment. Her way of dealing with the situation taught her to remain emotionally detached and she advises other heads to ensure the school community understands your expectations and where you are coming from.

Leadership Without Easy Answers, by Ronald A. Heifetz

Good leaders develop responsibility in people. They have the task of getting people to clarify what matters most, in what balance and without trade offs. Others may criticise this approach, expecting the leader to dictate instead of educating people to want to do things. Simple case studies make these principles stick. Leaders should generate the right questions rather than provide ready answers.

The Energy and Well-Being Pocketbook

This pocketbook will show you how to work more healthily and boost your energy, drive and enthusiasm. The author describes how food and exercise can stimulate the brain and relieve stress, and how plants, colour, sound, lighting and other factors can contribute to the creation of an energy-boosting work environment.

There is advice on poise and posture, breathing, taking energy-boosting breaks and a range of activities that can be carried out, including desk exercises. In conclusion, there are sections on work/life balance and on how to create a well-being and energy action plan. Gillian Burn wrote the Energy and Well-Being Pocketbook.
