Small school definition

NCSL defines a small school as a maintained school (or non-maintained special school) in England with 100 or fewer pupils of statutory school age (ie aged five and above). This threshold is in line with the definition of small schools used by Ofsted and the National Association of Small Schools. The number of pupils on roll should be taken from your most recent PLASC return at the time of application for the programme. If you are employed in a small school, your school will be entitled to claim reimbursement of travel and supply costs*. You will be sent further information about claiming at the start of the programme.

For further information on the type of establishments that are eligible for part subsidy, please read the establishment glossary /mediastore/image2/pdf-icon.gif (40kb, 3 pages).

*For small school participants starting the programme from the 1 April 2008, the reimbursement of travel and supply costs will be replaced by a single payment made on completion of the programme. Further details will be available shortly.

Cancellation and withdrawal policy

Should an individual withdraw prior to the start of the programme it may be possible to offer their place to a colleague. If this is the case, please contact your regional provider as soon as possible.
