National College for School Leadership

Greenhouse schools (Headteachers)

Introduction

An increasing number of school leaders are now taking action to encourage and secure future leadership capacity by identifying, developing and nurturing leadership potential in their schools. These 'greenhouse' schools make the development of tomorrow's leaders an integral and essential part of what they do.

In an investigation carried out by NCSL, researchers looked at eight schools across England: three primary schools, one special school and four secondary schools. They had all been identified as successful 'greenhouse' schools.

This interactive guide presents materials from two of the schools in the study. It looks at examples of practical strategies used to put into place systematic leadership development programmes to serve the needs both of their schools and of the system.
