National Professional Qualification for Headship

NPQH

Applications

The next application round for NPQH will open in September 2008.

The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) is NCSL's highly successful flagship provision for aspiring headteachers, which is rooted in and underpinned by the National Standards for Headteachers. It is mandatory to hold or have a place on NPQH in order to apply for a headship in the maintained sector.

NPQH has recently been redesigned to reflect the changing role of headship. It is for those who aspire to headship, not for those just seeking professional development. You can read more about the reasons for the redesign on our background page and find out about the structure of the redesigned provision on the programme structure page.

NPQH applicants should be highly motivated to be a headteacher, no more than 12-18 months from applying for headship posts and have the full support of their headteacher or line manager. Find out more on our how to apply page.

If you are currently a headteacher or governor and want to find out more about how NPQH can support aspiring headteachers in your school and how you can help develop them, visit our information for headteachers and governors page.
