Events

Following on from the Using and analysing data events held during autumn 2007 and spring 2008, the Strategic Initiatives Primary team at NCSL and partners from the National Strategies are now offering two more events to explore and develop further understanding of performance data and its implications for assessment for learning, target setting and school self-evaluation. During autumn 2008 and spring 2009 we will be offering Making sense of data and Joining up the data - each event will last one day and will be available singly or in combinations of consecutive days for those who want to attend both days together. Learning is enhanced when two or more people attend from the same school.

These events will be held in each of the nine government office regions and will cater for up to 30 participants at each event. They are intended for primary and junior school leaders - ideally, the headteacher and/or another key leader involved in analysing data, setting targets and evaluating whole school performance. These events will be led by experienced facilitators from NCSL and National Strategies, and will draw on the latest updates to RAISEonline as well as key national publications, for example ‘Making good progress at Key Stage 2’ (Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF), January 2008) and ‘Making great progress - schools with outstanding rates of progression in Key Stage 2’ (Department for Education and Skills (DfES), June 2007).

Making sense of data

Making sense of data repeats the successful Using and analysing data events run for school leaders with very positive evaluations. It aims to improve participants’ knowledge and understanding of the interactive data management tool (RAISEonline) to assist schools in monitoring performance and setting targets for individuals and groups of pupils. It will encourage and enable school leaders to understand better the principles that underpin RAISEonline and the implications for schools of the Public Service Agreement (PSA) education targets. Participants will be able to practise skills and knowledge application using both anonymous data and that of their own schools, and gain increased knowledge, understanding and confidence in the use of data.

Joining up the data

Joining up the data is a new event and builds on the successful Using and analysing data events and Making sense of data. The day will include an update on the contents of 2008 RAISEonline as well as further exploration of the interactive functions. Participants will consider the use of data in the context of Assessing Pupil Progress and Assessment for Learning, as well as for tracking progress and cohort evaluation. Participants will be able to practise skills and apply learning using both anonymous data and that of their own schools.
