NCSL is developing an accelerated leadership programme designed to meet the changing needs and challenges of leadership in today's schools, to replace the current Fast Track programme from September 2009. The re-designed programme will reflect findings from an independent five year study and consultations with a wide range of partners and stakeholders, including Fast Track teachers and alumni.
NCSL has taken the decision to cancel the procurement process for delivery of Fast Track. The current provider, CfBT Education Trust, has been asked to continue to deliver the existing programme for one more year. The College is committed to ensuring that it offers the best possible quality of service and is working in partnership with CfBT, to ensure that the same high standard of delivery is maintained for participants.
From March, recruitment will be suspended onto the current Fast Track Teaching programme.
Fast Track Teaching is an accelerated leadership programme designed for those classroom teachers in the early stages of their careers, who have already demonstrated the potential to rapidly progress into senior leadership positions. The programme also aims to equip them with the skills to make a significant impact to their school and the lives of the children they teach. Fast Track is all about improving the teacher, the school and education as a whole.
It is a highly-structured and challenging professional development programme for which participants will need to devote both time and effort. But with the right motivations and commitment, great achievements can be realised and built on for years to come.
The key thing about becoming a leader through Fast Track is not only that you get there quicker, but that you become a better quality leader through the experience and support of the programme.

The programme is for individuals who hold qualified teacher status (QTS) in the UK and are working in a maintained school in England, are General Teaching Council for England (GTCE) registered and pre-threshold on the main pay scale. Just as important is their determination to improve education by becoming a senior leader within education.
Applications from teachers currently working in England on a work permit will be considered on a case-by-case basis by NCSL.
Please note continued GTCE registration requires the payment of an annual registration fee to maintain membership.
In order for applications to be assessed they will also need to be accompanied by a reference from a senior member of the school's leadership team (ideally the headteacher), who can comment objectively on the skills and suitability of the applicant and who can commit to supporting the teacher throughout the programme.
Qualified teachers with QTS from European Union (EU) countries need to register with the GTCE before they can join Fast Track. Qualified teachers from countries outside the EU need to gain QTS in England by another route and apply to Fast Track once they have achieved this. The Fast Track competencies and values represent the behaviours, characteristics and personal motivators that are needed in order to succeed and get the most out of the programme.
