Deputy Headteacher at Crowland Primary, Tottenham
"Since leaving a ten-year career in media production to become a teacher, I have made initiating change into one of my main goals. I first had to become a good teacher, and Fast Track helped by enabling me to utilise my past experience and understanding of leading large teams. I now see becoming a headteacher as a natural progression.
The advice and support from my personal leadership tutor at all stages leading up to my National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) application was priceless. She also worked with my headteacher to ensure my school gained maximum benefit from my work. For example, I created a state-of-the-art library that enables children from 3 to 11 to access over 4,000 printed and electronic books and media. I recently took 36 pupils to Diderot School in Troyes, France, on a joint project funded by the British Council. It was the first time we'd taken children abroad on that scale and it provided a fabulous experience. I've recently heard that I achieved the International Award which will involve leading seven projects with schools across the world and embedding them in our curriculum. I have met a range of teachers from Europe and Africa already to begin this process.
While on Fast Track, I attended all of the national conferences and heard from extremely interesting speakers. I also took part in workshops which helped me examine my personal management and leadership skills. One of the most effective was a three-day course called 'Authentic Leadership'. It gave me a greater understanding of my own learning styles and those of others. I apply this knowledge in my day-to-day teaching and on NPQH. Having this time outside school is an important part of maintaining your professional effectiveness. I would also say if you are serious about a career in teaching that develops children and brings about positive change, then Fast Track is the route you should take."
