Profile

Reception Teacher and Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator, St Barnabas and St Philips Church of England Primary, London
Joined Fast Track April 2003

"I had been working for four years since graduating when I found out about Fast Track while looking into my teacher training options. It seemed like a great opportunity and I felt it would recognise the skills and experience I could bring to the profession. I joined the programme during my Postgraduate Certificate of Education and have about two years left.

My Wider School Focus is to ensure that gifted and talented children are sufficiently challenged. I secured the co-ordinator role in my second year of teaching and created a strategy linked to the school improvement plan. I have organised staff INSET training, arranged for children to attend Saturday classes and summer schools, and established a philosophy club for Key Stage 1 children. I've also worked with class teachers to develop new ways for differentiating for more able children, with some good results.

My plan for the coming year is to focus on a target group of pupils who are both gifted and talented and who risk failing to achieve their potential because of behaviour problems or special needs. This will involve collaborating with lots of other staff in school, including the special educational needs co-ordinator, class teachers and teaching assistants.

This term I joined a change team focusing on early years and Key Stage 1 transition issues. I also facilitated a newly qualified teacher event this term, which was useful for me to both give advice and reflect on how far I've got. My aim now is to be a lead teacher then possibly an advanced skills teacher role. I have no intention of leaving the classroom anytime soon. For me that's what teaching is all about.

The programme has helped me step back and think about my career as well as what the school needs. It flags you up as someone who is prepared to take on more responsibility so your headteacher knows they have someone with lots of enthusiasm and capability. I don't think I would have been given this many opportunities unless I was in the programme."
