Deputy Head, Cronehills Primary, West Bromwich
"When I applied for the deputy head post, I got it straightaway, which is why I was only on the Fast Track programme for about four months. I wanted to go into the management side of teaching very quickly, but it all seemed to happen a lot faster than I ever imagined it would.
During my time on the course it taught me how to create a good CV and my mentor helped me with interview practice, which gave me an extra boost going for the job. Equally the school already had confidence in my abilities, despite my age and limited experience, because they knew that I had gone through the tough application process and been accepted on to the programme in the first place. I suppose it acts like an additional vetting procedure and effectively puts you one step ahead in the process.
I'm now back working with Fast Track but this time in a training capacity. At the recent regional conference, I facilitated various workshops. Being an alumna has been extremely valuable because I managed to get on a training course about consultant leadership that's usually only made available to established heads or middle managers with several years' experience behind them. I'm already using the skills I've developed to bring on my senior management team and, having recently completed the National Professional Qualification for Headship, my next goal is a headship – a chance to really put all I've learned into action."
