Claire Oaten

Deputy Head, Carleton Green Community Primary, Carleton, Blackpool

"I moved from newly qualified teacher to deputy head in five years and got my National Professional Qualification for Headship in January. I work in a local authority where the general expectation is to have seven years of teaching experience before you are considered for a headship. I've just achieved that so I'm now looking for my next move.

The Fast Track programme was very worthwhile and gave me access to good quality, pertinent training, which allowed me to push my career forward. There were certainly challenges along the way but I looked upon them as something from which I would learn and grow.

One interesting thing that it's taught me is if you are going to make a hard decision, take the time to explain your reasoning and be prepared to listen to what more experienced staff have to say. At times you won't be right. And if you are wrong, you have to admit it. That helps carry people with you.

Having now left I also appreciate another quality of NCSL – they listen to people who have gone through the programme. I was invited to attend the March conference as part of a large group discussion and then a smaller break-out session along with representatives from NCSL, heads, alumni, trainers and area coordinators. We fed back how the programme had gone, what worked well and what we thought could be improved.

One area coordinator has since been in touch about setting up a local alumni association. That's one of the most important and valuable aspects of Fast Track as far as I'm concerned - the networking, continued support and advice from peers who are going through the same experiences."
