Advanced Skills Teacher in Secondary Science, Alexandra High School and Sixth Form Centre, Tipton, West Midlands
Joined Fast Track April 2004
"I joined the Fast Track programme because I wanted to know whether or not I had what it takes to be a successful leader. The headteacher at Alexandra High School was extremely supportive, as was the deputy headteacher who became my school-based mentor. I was encouraged to explore my own ideas for the Wider School Focus. I developed a learning styles programme, which brought me into contact with pupils and staff across the school, as well as presenting at a headteachers' conference.
The face-to-face coaching I received from my personal leadership tutor (PLT) was the most powerful aspect of the programme. The initial meeting was particularly influential because my PLT gave me an undoubting belief that I would do well. He empowered me to develop my skills at a pace I was comfortable with. His advice was accessible and never biased – he always had my best interests at heart.
The professional development courses I chose to go on taught skills that I could apply in any context, whatever my role. 'Consulting and influencing skills' had a particular impact on my leadership focus, as it forced me to look at my behaviours and how I influence others around me. Neuro-linguistic programming helped reinforce the importance of questioning, acknowledging and having a deeper understanding of others.
Two years after joining the programme, I successfully secured the status of Advanced Skills Teacher (AST). As an AST, I currently spend 80 per cent of my time teaching and 20 per cent of my time with outreach work across the local authority in a consultancy role. I intend to develop my capacity in this role ahead of making applications for posts at senior leadership level. My long-term goal is to become a headteacher.
In terms of Fast Track as a whole, you get out what you put in. If you work hard and stay focused, you can be successful."
