Progress Co-ordinator Years 10 and 11, The Highfield School, Letchworth
Joined Fast Track September 2003
"I joined Fast Track at the start of my Postgraduate Certificate in Education year and I've got two years left on the programme. The professional development opportunities so far have been exceptional, particularly the 'Change management' residential course and the Leading from the Middle development programme. I have also gained useful opportunities from the less formal aspects of the Fast Track scheme, such as conferences and networking events, which are great for sharing experiences.
As a newly qualified teacher, my Wider School Focus in my first year was ethnic minority achievement. A couple of years ago that changed to looking at effective intervention with underachieving Key Stage 4 students. I co-ordinated a group of 19 staff across the whole school to concentrate on 34 students who were capable of getting five grade Cs at GCSE. At the start, none of them were on target to achieve this. Now 75 per cent are. In the light of this success, next year I'm determined to do even more. I'm currently setting up a larger group of teachers (about 25) to help more students and also develop other strategies we can use.
This year I won the Training and Development Agency's Outstanding New Teacher award for the Eastern region. The judges highlighted the progress I'd made since becoming Progress Co-ordinator for Years 10 and 11, and said that I was an 'exceptional' category winner. I now go through to the national finals of the teaching awards. .
Throughout the programme my personal leadership tutor has been both supportive and realistic. She understands the other pressures I'm under and is comfortable with me dipping in and out of Fast Track so I can take from it what I think will be beneficial to me and the students. The leadership training I have received through Fast Track constantly emphasises the importance of having a clear set of values that contribute to your vision for education. I use those parts of the programme that fit in with my vision and that will enable me to support more students more effectively. Fast Track enables you to take on a leadership role, but my main priority is always to be an outstanding classroom practitioner. Only then can you become a truly inspirational educational leader."
