Background

The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) has been redesigned to reflect the changing role of headship and of school leadership in general. Headteachers today have new responsibilities, and in the last few years there have been radical changes to the way schools interact with each other and with other services. The redesigned NPQH will prepare trainee headteachers for 21st century strategic leadership and management challenges.

In redesigning NPQH, NCSL consulted widely with the profession, holding regular consultation seminars with key stakeholders including serving and aspiring headteachers, professional associations, local and diocesan authorities and a range of relevant national bodies. These consultations contributed to shaping the provision.

In 2007, we submitted our advice on the redesign of NPQH to the Secretary of State for Education and Skills. The advice was accepted in May 2007 and can be read by following the links below.
