The significance of a school's context is now widely acknowledged and much research has been undertaken in a range of environments, particularly in urban and challenged schools. Although coastal communities differ enormously, a Leading Practice seminar held in June 2005 sought to identify common challenges facing school leaders in these locations.

The seminar focused on how successful leaders of coastal schools have made use of their unique context to lift the aspirations and achievements of students.
