This is a report of a study of the nature of the working lives and practices of contemporary headteachers in England. The study involved 34 practising headteachers, both novice and experienced from all phases and government regions. The findings demonstrate that, for some participants, a healthy work-life balance is achievable, whilst for others it is not, despite similar demands, workloads and pressures.
