Eligibility

1. Who should attend the research associate programme?

The programme is pr


imarily aimed at headteachers, deputy and assistant headteachers and leaders of children centres, but, exceptionally, those in other senior leadership roles may be considered.

The programme supports research into issues relating to the leadership of schools and children's centres, and therefore is not available to support research into other areas of activity, such as curriculum development.

2. Does my headteacher have to recommend me for this programme?

No, but you should have the support of your headteacher (if applicable) and/or your chair of governors.

3. Currently I do not work in a school or children's centre. Can my application be considered?
No, the programme is only available at practising school leaders and those who are leaders in children's centres.

4. Are there any pre-requisite programmes I must complete before I can do the research associate programme?

No

5. Do I need previous research experience?

No, support is offered with designing research projects and research methods.

6. I need more information about eligibility, where can I get this?

Applying

1. How do I apply?

It would be helpful to speak with Andy Coleman before you apply in writing to discuss your research proposal. You will then be required to complete an application form, which should be submitted electronically prior to the deadline for applications. For details please visit the how to apply page.

2. Can I access a printable copy of the application form?

3. Can I submit a hard copy application instead of an online application

No. Applications need to be made electronically.

4. Does this programme accept applications from both groups and individuals

Applications are welcome from groups and individuals. However you must discuss the specifics of your group enquiry with the programme manager prior to submitting an application.

5. When does the next application round begin?

Associateships normally begin in April and September.

6. When is the deadline for submitting applications?

The deadline for applications is usually 8-12 weeks prior to this [ie February and June]. The deadline for the next cohort is Friday 20 June.

7. Is the number of places available restricted?

Normally, we recruit up to 10 research associates per cohort but numbers often vary.

8. Does this application mean I am registered or will I have to undergo any further assessment?

You will be asked to come to Nottingham to discuss your research proposal further before any decision is made.

9. Will there be any briefings or taster sessions prior to application?

Unfortunately, these are not available. However, potential applicants are invited to attend the research associate conference.

Programme structure

1. What is the overall time commitment for this programme?

The programme lasts for one year. Associates are offered a grant of up to £5600, paid to the school/ children's centre, to cover release and expenses. This equates to around 30 days. However ,most associates also use some additional time to complete their research.

2. How many residential days are there

There are six induction days which take place in Nottingham. These have a residential element.

3. Do I have to attend all sessions?

Yes, except in exceptional circumstances.

4. What support is available throughout the programme?

Support is offered in designing and completing the research. Ongoing tutorial support is also offered. Editorial support is provided in writing up the final report.

5. Are there any assessed activities or pieces of work?

Yes, the project design has to be approved by your tutor. The final report is subject to formal acceptance. Associates are also required to submit an interim report haf way through their study, and a full summary report at the end.

6. What other programmes, events or resources are available to me in this area?

You will have access to the University of Nottingham library and NCSL resources and literature. You will also get the opportunity to network with colleagues during your visits to NCSL. Associates often utilise the conference and accommodation facilities at NCSL throughout their associateship to help with their research.

Materials and online activites

1. Do I have access to online facilities?

Yes, as part of the induction you have a short session on how talk2learn, NCSL's online community, can provide you further opportunity to network. Some associates have successfully used talk2learn to help them with their research. You will also have access to materials hosted by the Ashridge Virtual Learning Resource Centre.

2. Where can I get technical support for problems with online access?

3. Do I have to pay for any materials or resources that will help with my research project?

The costs for any additional materials should come out of the grant.

Costs

1. Are there any grants available?

Yes, a grant of £5600 is paid to the participant's schools/ children's centre and covers any necessary supply cover, travel costs and additional resources required to help with the research. This is paid in three instalments throughout the year depending on how the individual is progressing.

Professional development

1. Can the research associate programme contribute any credit towards an MA or MEd?

No, the programme does not offer formal credit. However, you may use your research to inform your MA or MEd.

2. Are there any other related opportunities available to me?

Many associates subsequently support other areas of the College's activities, for instance facilitating at events or presenting at conferences, such as the Research Associates conference.
