Programme structure

Safer recruitment online training has been developed for headteachers and governors with the aim of improving recruitment processes in schools to help deter, identify and reject applicants who might be unsuitable to work with children. The training provides valuable background information, advice about a safer school culture, best practice suggestions and practical advice to strengthen safeguards against employing unsuitable people.

Why is the training important?

The Bichard Inquiry concluded that schools need to pay more attention to issues about safeguarding children when they recruit and appoint staff. Sir Michael Bichard recommended that headteachers and school governors should receive training to help strengthen the recruitment process and procedures. The aim is to have at least one person on every interview panel who has completed this training. The training will help schools to develop and maintain a school culture that is safer for children.

Who is it for?

Safer recruitment online training is being offered free to the headteacher and a nominated governor in all state schools in England. It is also available to two representatives from each local authority.

Some of the training is also available as public training materials.

What is involved?

Safer recruitment online training is provided as an online course, with assessment questions that we estimate take around four or five hours to complete, although this will vary between individuals. The course can be completed over any number of sessions, allowing participants to take the training at their own pace. It is available from any computer with internet access.

Headteachers, governors and local authority staff who successfully complete the full training will be awarded a certificate, which can be printed off at the end of the assessment.
