Understanding the recruitment market
What should you expect in the headteacher recruitment process, and how best can you prepare?
The principle messages in this section are unlikely to surprise you, but they should challenge you.
Think of this like the challenge to adopt a healthier lifestyle. You know what you should and shouldn't eat and drink, and that you should exercise more. Lack of knowledge isn't usually a problem. The challenge lies in applying that knowledge to change your behaviour.
This guide approaches the recruitment process in the same way. Information is important, but it is only the foundation, useless without the attitude and mindset to win through.
Case study: Sue Yeomans, Headteacher, Stocks Green
Primary School, Hildenborough
I had been at the school for two
terms when the headteacher encouraged me to start NPQH. I wanted to take time to reflect on what I was
learning on the programme, and to apply it in school. I trained to be a teacher as a mature student,
so had only been in education for five years. Building my leadership experience in school was important
to me. My vision for how I would want to lead my school became clearer as I progressed through NPQH.
When the position at Stocks Green became vacant, my first thought was that it had come a term too early
for me. I thought long and hard about applying, and was delighted when I was successful.
